Parent Participation - Working Together

The district offers several forums to unite parents, schools, students and the community. These forums promote communication and joint problem solving as well as ensure academic success for all children.

Parents and community wishing to become involved in school and/or district committees and groups are encouraged to contact individual schools or LCSD1 at 771-2100
  • District Parent Advisory Committee—At least two parent representatives from each school are nominated. Committee members were involved in various issues and made significant recommendations and contributions to LCSD1 during the 2007-2008 school year by providing input for the district's NCA accreditation process.
  • The Wyoming Parent Network continued its statewide effort to encourage all parents to work with their legislators on education issues.
In addition, a baseline survey/database tracked parent involvement in terms of attendance, hours of volunteer time and other contributions.
  • More than 2,600 parents contributed a significant amount of time.
  • About 70 percent of elementary parents attended curricular events such as math and reading nights.
  • About 91 percent of elementary parents, 58 percent of junior high and 31 percent of high school parents attended open houses.
  • About 91 percent of parents signed parent compacts, which represent Shared Responsibility for Learning (SRL), an agreement developed jointly in all schools by students, parents and staff. The agreement outlines responsibilities for learning through a checklist of responsibilities for teachers, parents and students. Parents and students discuss the SRL at home and sign the agreement, indicating receipt and review of the contents, then return it to the school. The district is responsible for developing a process for coordinating parent involvement and providing technical assistance and support necessary to plan and implement effective parent involvement.
  • Parent, student and staff surveys are conducted district wide once every three years with the district surveying these groups most recently in early 2009. Some schools choose to survey their parent population more often.

Other Opportunities for Involvement

  • Open Houses—At the beginning of the school year, every school holds an open house for families and students. This provides parents with an excellent opportunity to meet school staff members and tour the facility. In addition, staff has an opportunity to communicate class and building goals, the academic program and school and classroom organization and management.
  • Parent/Teacher Groups—Most schools have parent/teacher organizations/associations (PTO/PTA). Others have less formal groups that support specific extra curricular activities.
  • Parents on Committees—Parents are invited to participate in the following committees: the district parent advisory council, the building collaborative decision-making team, the district and building school improvement teams, the district standards and curriculum committees (in each content area), the district calendar, policy and building advisory teams, and the NCA school and district steering, profile and action planning teams.
  • Communication—District-wide student/parent handbooks are provided to every elementary, junior and senior high family. The objective is to provide accurate and consistent information to all students, parents and guardians of students; and provide administrators and teachers with consistent guidelines throughout the district. Included are rules, regulations, policies and curriculum standards and benchmarks. (See Handbooks in the following links)

  • Newsletters —Each school has a building newsletter/newspaper available on a regular basis. Although content may vary from school to school, newsletters are a reliable source of information about activities/events, schedules or schedule changes, outstanding student and staff achievements and general news about what is happening in the school.
Newspaper—The districtwide newspaper  - Public Schools’ Chronicle - is published five times a year and mailed to every home and business in the Cheyenne area. The publication provides community stakeholders a window into the classroom as it features student learning activities and events. In addition, the publication contains informational articles on issues affecting parents and the community.
  • Website--The district Web site provides district and school-level information including event calendars, schedules, policies, handbooks and a variety of parent, community and district resources.
